Forged, Not Cast

Miao silver is worked by hand — melted, hammered into thin sheets, drawn into fine wire, then shaped and assembled piece by piece. A single headdress may carry hundreds of individually forged elements.

The forging technique of Miao silver ornament is inscribed on China's national intangible cultural heritage list. Our archive documents the smiths, the workshops and the finished work.
